Added Touri Yoshino’s works.
We uploaded of works Touri Yoshino to Hagiyakiya.
This time, we added two ash-covered “Haikaburi” matcha bowls.
Ash-covered “Haikaburi” “灰被り” works can only be obtained around the place where firewood is thrown in from the side and the firewood falls and burns out when the climbing kiln is fired.
In the anagama kiln, firewood is thrown into a relatively large area until the ash fills the work, but in a typical climbing kiln “Nobori Gama” “登り窯”in Hagi, there are only a limited number of places where ash can accumulate, and the firing time is short, so not enough ash can be taken to fill the work, and ash-covered pieces can only be taken a few times during a single firing.
In addition, because the wood is placed where the wood is thrown into the kiln, ash-covered works in the climbing kiln often include vases and water jars that can be fired without falling over even when hit by a thrown wood. Even so, not many works such as flower vases and water jars “Mizusashi” can be fired because the lids are not removed or broken when they are hit by firewood. As for ash-covered matcha bowls, they are more susceptible to damage from firewood than other types of bowls, so it can be said that they are even more precious and rarely seen.
There are pieces such as Shigaraki ware and Iga ware, in which firewood is continually thrown into the ash during firing until it melts, and the melted ash becomes a beautiful green glass called “beadlo,” but the ash-covered matcha bowls seen in Hagi ware generally have a burnt look on the surface.
Within this burnished appearance, there are various highlights, such as pinkish kiln discoloration “Yohen”, black with a hint of blue, white reminiscent of ash, and a three-dimensional effect created by the ash adhering to the surface.
As the owner of the store, I myself love this Hagiyaki ash-covered Haikaburi scenery, and when I visit kilns and see Haikaburi works, I always feel a little excited.
Regardless of Hagi ware or any other pottery in the world, the coexistence of ash and vessels made from wood is a charm that is unique to works made in wood-fired kilns such as climbing kilns and anagama kilns.
I am currently listing several ash-covered works at Hagiyakiya.
I would like to create a new page with only Haikaburi works in the near future, which may be a pleasure for only me. But please look forward to it.
