Shimpei Watanabe, Imari ware potter.

From August 14th to 23rd, we will have an exhibition Shimpei Watanabe, who works in Imari.

In the 17th century, it is said that the current Saga Prefecture has begun manufacturing porcelain for the first time in Japan, and from that time onwards, it has attracted pottery fans around the world with names such as Arita ware and Imari ware.

At the time of the 17th century, the technique of making pure white porcelain was extremely valuable, and it is said that the technique was protected by setting up a barrier called “Sekisho” like the Okawachi Mountain area in Imari. It was like a fort.

Famous for its porcelain production in Europe, Meissen has longed for Chinese porcelain and pure white pottery such as Arita and Imari ware, and is said to be the first place in Europe to produce white porcelain.

The city of Meissen was also built like a fort so that their technique would not leak out.

In modern times, white porcelain is abundant in our daily lives, but in the past, pure white ware and the delicately decorated patterns on it were also representative of Japan’s industry and it attracted people all over the world.

Shimpei Watanabe, who is from Ehime prefecture, he graduated from Arita Ceramics School, gained experience working at a pottery factory and was independently opened in Imari City.

He was fascinated by “Koimari” old style Imari ware and started his pottery career.
From his work, you we can see the unique taste of white porcelain like Koimari.

There are mainly two techniques those dyeing “Sometsuke” and painting “Etsuke” in the decoration of porcelain. Dyeing “Sometsuke” is a technique in which painting is done on an unglazed base material, a transparent glaze is applied on top of it, and then final firing is performed. On the other hand, painting “Etsuke” is done on the base material after firing with glaze.

Many of his works use the dyeing technique, and you can feel the subtle shades of light and shade and the depth of Japanese.

Usually, the exhibition at Hagiyakiya mainly focuses on pottery, mainly sake cups and tea bowls, but you can also enjoy cool porcelain dishes in this hot summer.
