Hagi Ware New Age – Three Special Exhibitions Open at the Hagi Uragami Museum

Today, October 30, I attended the opening ceremony and special preview of three exhibitions at the Hagi Uragami Museum in Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture.

The three exhibitions opening tomorrow are “NIGO® and Handeishi,” “Hagi Ware New Age,” and “The Hagi Taishou (Grand Prix) of Contemporary Ceramics VII.”

Among them, “Hagi Ware New Age” features five contemporary Hagi ware artists:

  • Yasushi Okada
  • Takao Tahara
  • Eiichi Shibuya
  • Shinbei Sakakura XVI
  • Taro Miwa

During the special preview, each of the five artists gave a short speech.

The exhibition highlights how these artists carry forward the long history and traditions of Hagi ware while developing their own distinctive approaches to ceramics.

Their works demonstrate the diversity of contemporary Hagi ware, extending beyond traditional tea ceramics into new forms, textures, and artistic expressions.

Another exhibition, “NIGO® and Handeishi,” presents 55 works by Handeishi Kawakita from the collection of fashion designer NIGO®, alongside 25 tea bowls created by NIGO® himself.

“The Hagi Taishou (Grand Prix) of Contemporary Ceramics VII” features 61 selected works, offering visitors a glimpse into the diverse expressions of contemporary ceramic art.

Together, these three exhibitions provide a unique opportunity to experience both the traditions and future possibilities of Japanese ceramics.
