Celadon pottery artist Akihiko Watanabe’s Exhibition
 
 
From June 21st to 30th, we will hold an online exhibition of Celadon potter Akihiko Watanabe on the website and at the store.
Mr. Watanabe is from Yamagata Prefecture, and is currently creating pottery in Shizuoka Prefecture.
 
Akihiko Watanabe and our shop met by chance when I visited Robert Yellin in the world-famous Robert Yellin Yakimono Gallery in Kyoto.
After that, I went to visit Mr. Akihiko Watabe’s kiln directly, but in spite of those who have many results, he correspond very kindly and have reached this work exhibition.
 
Mr. Watanabe is making his celadon works using “anaga” woodfire kiln that is very old type of kiln made by digging a hole in the side of a hill. This is very unusual nowadays.
In order to protect the work from the ash that dances in the pot, it is fired using a pot “saya”.
 
Although this is written in the previous blog, he expresses the fun of the work produced by woodfiring like this.
“Gas can calculate tops, but woodfiring can not calculate tops, so there may be works beyond my imagination.”
Although the work made by woodfiring is not necessarily superior to other methods,
his pottery activity, which continues to make works using woodfiring kiln in the presence of gas kilns and electric kilns, was very impressive. I really respect his policy and attitude towards his own work.
 
This his commitment appears naturally in the work, and the fine crystal-like penetration “kannyu” and bubble-like landscape trapped there appear beautifully in the work.
This penetration is growing as we use.
When I drink sake by myself, I line up some guinomi sake cups and enjoy the characteristic and slight taste change that the guinomi sake cup has, and at the same time I am raising those guinoi sake cup.
I always have a good time drinking and having a good time with his guinomi sake cup.
 
At the next exhibition, we will introduce Akihiko Watanabe’s works focusing on Sake ware like Guinomi sake cups, Tokkuri bottles, and also Mizusashi water container and flower vases.

1959: Born in Hirashimizu, Yamagata City, a pottery area that has continued since the late Edo period.
 
1983: After training with apprenticeship, “Raijin kiln” opened in Hirashimizu.
 
1988: Solo exhibition at Shibuya Kuroda Toen since 1988.
 
1989: Solo exhibition at Yamagata Onuma department store since 1989.
Solo exhibition at Niigata Gallery Kon.
 
1990: Solo exhibition at Shinjuku Keio Department Store since 1990.
 
1995: Solo exhibition at Chiba Atelier Tom since 1995..
 
1993: He had old style woodfiring kiln “Anagama”.
 
1994: Zhejiang Province, Nanguan Guangdong, Longquan Miao in China, and other old kiln sites visited.
 
2000: NHK Yakimono Japanese Pottery tour appearance.
Japan Craft Association regular member.
Many awards such as Japanese Traditional Crafts Exhibition, Japanese Traditional Crafts New Works Exhibition.
 
2002: Hiroshima Suga gallery solo exhibition.
 
2005: Solo exhibition at Ippukuan Aomori.
 
2006 Solo exhibition at Chicago, USA.
 
A solo exhibition at Shizuoka Mishima Gallery Aun since 2006.
 
2007: The The Peninsula Tokyo bought celadon bowl for Royal Suite room.
 
2008: The 25th anniversary of the independence, made new woodfiring kiln “anagama” in Izu.

2009: Solo exhibition at Yoshino Yamagata Gallery from 2009.
 
2014: Portland Museum of Art (USA) bought celadon incense burner “Koro” in 2014.
 
2018: Exhibited at the Tokyo “Kagurasaka Yuraku”.
