This tea bowl was created by Yu Okada, a holder of the Yamaguchi Prefecture Intangible Cultural Property designation.

As the eighth generation of Senshu-gama, Okada has built an international reputation through works that combine the traditions of Hagi ware with a highly distinctive contemporary vision.

The most striking feature of this bowl is its dramatic white glaze. Applied generously across the surface, the glaze contracts during firing to reveal the dark clay body beneath, creating bold patterns that resemble tree branches, river networks, or cracks formed by natural forces.

Despite the powerful visual impact, the bowl itself possesses a gentle and welcoming form. Its rounded silhouette rests comfortably in the hands, while the interior opens gracefully toward the center, inviting contemplation during the tea ceremony.

The contrast between the soft form and the vigorous glaze pattern creates a remarkable tension. Every angle reveals new details, from the expressive rim to the rich interaction between glaze and clay around the foot.
