White glaze Matcha chawan teabowl. 13th Tohbe Tahara. Hagi yaki.

This white-glazed tea bowl was created by Tahara Tobei XIII, the current head of the renowned Tahara Tobei Kiln, a lineage that has long been cherished by tea practitioners.

After studying in Karatsu, Tahara returned to Nagato and has continued to explore new possibilities through the fusion of Hagi clay and glaze, while remaining deeply rooted in tradition.

The bowl is distinguished by its soft white glaze and gentle presence. Subtle pink tones along the rim and foot reveal the warmth of the clay beneath, adding depth and character to the serene surface. The flowing movement of the glaze creates quiet visual interest, rewarding close observation.

Though refined in form, the bowl feels remarkably warm and natural in the hand. Its comfortable shape settles effortlessly into the palm, while the pale glaze beautifully enhances the vibrant green of matcha.

A work that reflects both the heritage of the Tahara Tobei lineage and the continuing pursuit of new expressions within Hagi ware.
