From 17th July, Shigaraki potter, Kazuya Furutani.

We will have an On-line exhibition of Shigaraki yaki potter Kazuya Furutani the son of Michio Furutani.

Shigaraki was the location where the previous NHK’s morning drama “Scarlet” was filmed.

Kazuya Furutani was featured in the early 2020 NHK’s TV program “Bino Tsubo -The mark of beauty-” as a potter who values the soil of Shigaraki and creates Shigaraki-yaki.

He graduated Yamaguchi Art college, so he is very associated with Yamaguchi Prefecture.

I want to say that welcome back to Yamaguchi!

Shigaraki is one of Japanese six ancient kilns like Seto and Tokoname in Aichi Prefecture, Echizen in Fukui Prefecture, Tamba in Hyogo Prefecture, and Bizen in Okayama Prefecture.

Even today, the Shigaraki area is a very important place for the Japanese pottery world, Many potters from all over Japan and all over the world are gathering to “Togei no mori -pottery forest-“ located in the center of Shigaraki and studying to improve their technical skills for making their own pottery.

Young potters visit there one after another, and even veteran potters are inspired by them, constantly creating new creativity, Shigaraki is a place with a high pottery passion in Japan.

Mr. Kazuya Furutani who is regarded as a potter who leads next Shigaraki.

One of the characteristics of Shigaraki ware is the “strength” that is produced by the soil and flame, such as the Yakishime and vedro that melts the ash generated from firewood at high temperatures. We can feel his own elegantness in addition to that strength from his works.
