Nerikomi knead ceramic potter, Mika Sato

“Hagiyakiya x Multiply”

This “Hagiyakiya webshop” was started because I took an interest in Japanese ceramic pottery culture.
This Japanese pottery culture was growing up with Japanese Matcha Tea ceramony, call “Sado” culture.
Tea masters wanted excelent “Tea tools” for example Teabowl, Water container, and the potter has created more excelent tools for the demand.
They were always going to make better things, and also, the potter is proud to be a potter with like this culture.

We have been introduced you Hagi ware works as our pottery culture of hometown.
From now, we are intoroducing potter and their works to all over the world with Hagi works through the our homepage as an exhibition.
Before starting the exhibition, we are talking about Kilns and artists who are joining our special event.

Mika Sato who is Nerikomi ceramic potter.

I met Ms. Mika Sato, a “Nerikomi” knead ceramic artist.

The place I visited this time is Fuji Usagi in Yaizu City, Shizuoka Prefecture.
While Fuji Usagi is holding a workshop and her solo exhibition, I decided to get in touch with the owner and Ms. Mika Sato for acceptance.
Regarding places that I can’t visit frequently, I am very pleased to have the opportunity to see the work like this time. The owner of Fuji Usagi is very calm and the interior is a quiet wonderful, so you can enjoy the art works really well.
Fuji Usagi hold various exhibition, please visit there when you come nearby.
I recommend Fuji Usagi gallery.

Ms. Mika Sato has created a “Nerikomi” kneaded porcelain.
Usually, there are many works called “Tsuchimono” ceramic using clay, but Ms. Mika Sato’s works are not clay-based because of ease for ordinary using and to make the color look beautiful, she is using porcelain materials to create her works.
Therefore, Ms. Mika Sato’s works are light in weight, and there is translucency depending on the work.
This “lightness” is for usability as a tableware of everyday use, and “translucency” can express the beauty of ceramics as an object, it is a delicate feeling unique to women.
Also, regarding the color which is the biggest feature of the “Nerikomi” kneaded porecelain, Ms. Mika Sato’s work expresses a clear coloration by mixing with porcelain, and it creates a very beautiful color.

It seems that took 10 years of trial and error for reaching at the technique unique to Ms. Mika Sato. In the beginning, she could not formed works due to cracking, especially regarding a large bowl, there was a lot of hard work.
But now she is becoming a popular potter who is highly evaluated and active in the world wide such as holding solo exhibitions at major department stores in Tokyo, receiving a prize at a competition in New York, and doing her workshops abroad.
Although it is such a popular potter, Ms. Mika Sato herself was very cheerful and comfortable speaking to me. It seems that her workshop is near from “Wine restaurant” Japanese wonderful restaurant in Shonan area where my friend run, so I would like to have a meeting with eating delicious food next time.
