Shigarakiyaki ceramic artist, Nozomu Shinohara

“Hagiyakiya x Multiply”

This “Hagiyakiya webshop” was started because I took an interest in Japanese ceramic pottery culture.
This Japanese pottery culture was growing up with Japanese Matcha Tea ceramony, call “Sado” culture.
Tea masters wanted excelent “Tea tools” for example Teabowl, Water container, and the potter has created more excelent tools for the demand.
They were always going to make better things, and also, the potter is proud to be a potter with like this culture.

We have been introduced you Hagi ware works as our pottery culture of hometown.
From now, we are intoroducing potter and their works to all over the world with Hagi works through the our homepage as an exhibition.
Before starting the exhibition, we are talking about Kilns and artists who are joining our special event.

Shigaraki ware potter, Nozomu Shinohara.

I met Shigaraki ware potter Mrs. Nozomu Shinohara’s studio.

There was a gallery of Mr. Nozomu Shinohara about one hour by car from Kyoto city.
I would like to see him because I have been seeing the work and activity from his Instagram for a long time. Since I knew that it was not so far from Kyoto city and I got an appointment with Mr. Nozomu Shinohara.

Until now, mainly around West Japan, I have been visiting various kinds of pottery areas such as Koishiwara ware in Fukuoka prefecture, Karatsu ware in Saga prefecture, Arita yaki, Imari, and Kumamoto prefecture, Hagi, Okayama Bizen ware, Hyogo Tamba yaki, but Shigaraki The village was a bit different from the other pottery area.
I had seen many wholesalers that makes and sell mass-product ceramics along the road.
In addition, the “Togei-no mori” that means “Forest of ceramic” where artists from all over the world gather and learn or make their own technique higher. That is also an art facility unique to Shigaraki, which makes me feel that this is one of the 6 oldest kiln pottery area in Japan as expected.

When I arrived at Mr. Nozomu Shinohara’s gallery, He and his beautiful wife welcome me.
I had a delicious cake and delicious coffee handmade by his wife using Japanese sake cake. The gallery space is like a small cafe and we can imagine the situation of the two of them are always hosting guests here.

I forgot to take pictures, but Mr. Nozomu Shinohara is protecting the technique of “Yakishime” burning without using glaze. It is different from Bizen ware, I think that the roughness of the soil comes from Shigaraki ware more. The part of the powerfulness which he has may also be added to that works and it may feel extra so.
In addition, the beadro glaze, which is a natural glaze ash as it burns in the form of glass, also has an eye on it, which became one accent. The green coloration created naturally is very beautiful, and the performance of the color which the soil and the flames carry out was so impressive.

Mr. Nozomu Shinohara’s personality is also very honest, he told me the enthusiasm for his work and the strong feelings towards Shigaraki ware because he has moved from other areas.
I think the same in any occupation, the amount of heat how to make our performance better for that person’s own work is really important. In particular, the more it is the expressionist, the more its heat appeared in their own work. I could feel his passion from his works and his works told me it.
I think that I would like to work with someone with a fever and I also learned from Mr. Shinobu Shinohara again that I have to do my work with my high level passion.

I hope that Mr. Nozomu Shinohara’s works will be able to show off to the world through our online shop Hagakiya.
